Mozart was a devout catholic and a fair proportion of his work was religious in nature. Despite this, Mozart was also a Freemason, joining a Viennese lodge in 1784. As a young teenager, Mozart visited the Sistine Chapel. Having heard just two performances of Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere, he wrote the music out from memory - the first time it was written down outside of the Vatican. They had kept the sheet music highly secret and closely guarded! Because of this, the Pope (Clement XIV) made him a knight - he was given the Papal Order of the Golden Spur.

During a visit to Vienna, Wolfgang was offered the opportunity to perform in front of the new Emperor, Joseph II - and would have been paid a fee of almost 230 florins - half his yearly wage for one performance! The Archbishop however denied him the opportunity and Mozart handed in his resignation. Instead of allowing this straight away, the Archbishop actually dismissed him - by getting an assistant to kick Mozart’s backside out of a door! It was too late for the one-off concert though. Mozart decided to stay in Vienna rather than return to Salzburg and apologize.

Sadly, four of these died very young. Mozart is one of the classical world’s most famous and prolific composers, with over 600 works to his name. Many of his works are considered to be amongst the finest examples of their genre. Early Life Wolfgang’s father was called Leopold Mozart. His mother’s name was Anna Maria. Leopold was a music teacher and composer. Wolfgang was the youngest of seven children. Mozart surprised his family when at the age of three he started playing chords on the clavier (a type of piano).
